  • Austin Solar Sunflower Field at Mueller

    A retail lot in Austin, Texas recently sprouted a stunning field of solar sunflowers that soak up the sun’s rays to provide shade while generating a steady stream of renewable energy. Designed by public art team Harries/Heder, the installation consists of 15 flower-like solar photovoltaic panels located on a pedestrian and bike path between the village of Mueller and Austin’s highway I-35. According to the Harries/Heder, the flowers are “an icon for the sustainable, LEED certified Muller Development and highly visible metaphor for the energy conscious City of Austin."

  • Austin Home with Solar Photovoltaic Panels in the Mueller Community

    Mueller's Green Building Program — one of the most aggressive in the country; incorporates national LEED standards. As a result, Mueller's designs are resource-efficient, use non-toxic and recyclable regional materials and help maintain and improve air and water quality. The program is designed to promote better health, greater comfort and lower utility bills.

  • Wind Turbine at LCRA's McKinney Roughs Nature Park

    The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA), the Texas State Energy Conservation Office (SECO), the Alternative Energy Institute (AEI) at West Texas A&M University, and Meridian Energy Systems collaborated to install a Skystream 3.7 residential-sized wind system at the LCRA’s McKinney Roughs Nature Park near Bastrop, Texas. It is used as an educational teaching aid. The wind turbine: Skystream 3.7 with a 2.4 kilowatt rating mounted on a 75 ft pole with a 12 ft blade span. The turbine begins producing power with 8 mph breezes, has an average power rating of 1.8 kilowatts (kW) and operates most efficiently at wind speeds of 12 mph. Full output is achieved with 20 mph winds

  • Solar Photovoltaic Panel at LCRA's McKinney Roughs Nature Park

    Primarily used as an educational aid. This 1-kW solar photovoltaic panel when combined with the wind turbine already on site, can offset about 2,500 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of power used each year at the nature park’s administration buildings. That equals a projected offset of about 3,400 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

  • LCRA's Mansfield Dam

    Mansfield Dam is one LCRA's six dams. Once the major source of LCRA's electric generation capacity, now provide power at times of peak demand as water levels allow. When fully operational, the dams' generating stations can supply as much as 292 megawatts of green electric power.

1 house at a time Event - January 22, 2011

Austin Green Energy Group teamed up with A Nurtured World's program, "1 house at a time" and volunteers from AtticDr.com, and the Applied Materials Foundation Green Team to make a sustainable difference at another home in our community.  This home was enhanced Saturday, January 22, 2011 and was the 1st "1house at a time" renovation for 2011 and the 30th in the history of the program since their start in 2007.

At 9am, Saturday morning, ten (10) Austin Green Energy Group members (John Holland, Otto Pfahl, Valerie Harrington, Dave Ort, Derek Bridges, David Kaufman, Sandy Brumleve, Mike Brumleve, Rita Lin,  and Bernie Johnson) joined volunteers from A Nurtured World, AtticDr.com, and the Applied Materials Foundation Green Team to make a difference in one elderly Austin woman’s life.  The event took place at a house in East Austin.  This was a huge project with many tasks accomplished. 

The following improvements were made:

Building Envelope/Weatherizing:

  •  Installation of foam insulators on all out outlets & light switches 
  • Seal-up / weather stripping of all exterior doors
  • Repair interior sheet rock holes in front living room ceiling
  • Blow in 60 bags of green fiber insulation to attic
  • Apply spray-on barrier in attic
  • Install solar attic ventilator on roof deck
  • Install 2 gable vents and 16 soffits vents in attic
  • Install insulating attic stairwell cover
  • Caulk all windows
  • Seal front door entry way at the base of the door
  • Installation of new storm door on the existing front door

 HVAC:

  • Replace A/C  filter with correct size
  • Seal A/C plenum return box and door way
  • Seal A/C ducts /register with caulk / mastic 

Energy Efficiency:

  • Insulate hot water heater lines in the water closet seal entry door way
  • Installation of solar screens on windows

 Quality of Life/Safety:

  • Clean up leaves and debris in yard
  • Installation of 10 rain gutter with down spout section above side entry door way.
  • Clean out attic
  • Seal all electrical boxes in attic to sheet rock
  • Provide exterior electrical box cover on north side of home
  • Repair front bedroom closet shelving

 

 

 

 

 

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

The event ended after about six laborious hours with one more Austin family more physically comfortable in their energy efficient home as well as having a more sustainable life.  All these activities will aid in making this Austin home more energy efficient and sustainable. 

These events are used to not only make homes more energy efficient and sustainable but also as an educational tool.  Each activity had an experienced leader to lead and teach the new volunteers.  It was a team effort that enabled the Austin Green Energy Group, A Nurtured World, AtticDr.com, and Applied Materials to make a difference in our community..."1 house at a time."
